Excerpt
With trembling fingers, I tapped at my phone screen, sobbing because I connected the
call and then cut it off in my haste. I couldn’t handle technology; I just
needed him. I was about to throw in the towel and just sit on the curb and cry
when it rang. His stupid face appeared on the screen, and my heart leapt. He
knew. He knew I needed him.
Choking at
the urgency to hear his voice, I tried again to get my fingers to cooperate,
and, finally, they did.
“Hello?”
There was pleading in my tone. “Ziggy?
There was a
short stretch of silence, and I thought maybe I’d fucked up the call again when
suddenly he spoke. “Bea? What’s wrong?”
“Zig—” A
sob cut me off.
“Bea, where
are you? What’s going on?”
“I need
you,” I whispered.
“Tell me
where?” he said with a steady determination that filled me with exactly the
comfort I needed right then. He was coming. It was going to be ok. I looked up
helplessly at my surroundings for a road name I could tell him.
“Um,” I
faltered. “I don’t know, I—” Fresh tears ran down my face, and I wiped at them
with the back of my hand, only then noticing the blood. “Oh God,” I gasped.
“Bea,
please. You’re scaring me. Are you hurt?”
“No,” I
assured him quickly. “I just…” I didn’t even know where to start.
“I need to
know where you are. Calm down. I’m here. Take a deep breath and try to tell me
where I need to go to find you. I’m coming. Okay? Now just tell me where.”
I turned in
place, looking for something I knew. I walked these streets every day, and
they’d never felt so alien to me. He was the only thing that felt safe right
then, but guilt swept over me, and I tried to pull myself together. I must have
been freaking him out, and that wasn’t fair. Nothing around me seemed familiar,
even though I knew it was; I was so disorientated. I needed to do what he told
me and take a breath.
He was
coming to get me.
It was ok.
“Dean
Street,” I told him as soon as I laid eyes on the street sign, relieved to be
tuning back in but feeling so stupid that I was so close to home and couldn’t
even focus enough to realise it. “At the Shaftsbury Avenue end, on the corner.”
“I’m
coming. Please just tell me you’re okay,” he said desperately into the phone.

Synopsis:

Gray Nolan’s biggest problem in life was the torch he carried for his closeted coach. He was just another happy-go-lucky dude, a college student and hockey player, when his ordinary existence was interrupted, and he became a human trafficking statistic.

He and seven other young men were taken aboard a luxurious yacht where they were to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Gray was beaten, shattered, and almost defeated by the time his buyer stepped out of the shadows in a swirl of his own cigarette smoke.

He was Gray’s new owner.

Darius Quinn had vowed never again to find himself in a situation like this. His days as a private military contractor were over. No more missions, no more risks, no more personal attachments. Yet, here he was, after weeks of searching, face-to-face with his broken prize.

It was time to get the knucklehead back to his family.

Quick and easy was Darius’s plan.

Then everything went sideways.

Excerpt:

They were saving Gray for last.

With each guy they hauled out of the room, he grew more despondent and withdrawn. He’d managed to get on his feet again, but he could barely move without an explosion of hurt unfurling inside him. So he stood silent, face impassive and smeared with blood, eyes unseeing, as another guy was up.

The worst part was when they screamed wherever they were. Gray guessed a deck or two above him.

Were they getting raped yet?

He knew it was coming.

He stiffened as the door opened once more, and this time, it was Cole’s turn. His features were set; he’d braced himself for whatever was to come. Or so Gray hoped. He couldn’t imagine any of them had a clue what they were in for.

Least of all Gray. Were they gonna kill him? He’d watched enough movies to know what “make an example of someone” usually meant.

Milo was next, and he looked pleadingly at Gray. “Please do something,” he whimpered. “I’ve never—I can’t—please, Gray. P-please!”

Gray clenched his jaw and said nothing, because what the fuck could he do? The door was shut, leaving him alone. He listened. He couldn’t not listen. Compelled and beating himself up, he strained his ears to hear every torturous plea.

It was quiet for some time, and then…then the screaming began. It mingled with muffled sobs and sharp, choking sounds. And low rumbles of laughter. There was even applause. Gray’s stomach revolted and tightened. Nausea crept higher and higher. Milo was being abused, and low-life perverts found that funny.

The world became a dark place for Gray. Hope had dwindled enough that he couldn’t see it anymore. He lost faith in humanity and sent a glance skyward as his eyes welled up. Mom, I love you. Gage, Gideon, Gabriel, Aiden, Isla, the little niece or nephew I never got to meet…I love you, and I’m sorry.

When the door was opened a final time, Gray was resigned. Benny stood there with sinister glee in his eyes, and of course, the brute wanted his fun, too. Gray accepted two fists to his face before he fell back against the wall, pain spreading like wildfire. Memories from better times that had been rolling past slowly gained speed as if he somehow knew time was running out.

Two men had to support Gray’s weight on the way out of the cabin. His head hung, flickers of memories battling against fatigue and hurt. He couldn’t see where they were going, and when they encountered a set of stairs, he stumbled and lurched. He focused on the faces of his family. Mostly, Mom and his three brothers. The recent additions were his stepdad—Aiden—his daughter Isla, and Isla’s fiancé, Jack. Gray loved the expansion of their family. The day he’d learned Isla was pregnant, he’d been so fucking thrilled. Now he’d never get to spoil his niece or nephew.

Something warm trickled down his face. He didn’t know if it was blood or tears. Maybe a combination of both.

Gray was shoved into a large room, and the first glance with blurry vision made it look empty. Then he blinked and noticed there were booths along the far wall. The lighting was poor and focused on the middle, shadows cast everywhere. And he didn’t care anymore. He gave up registering things.

“Your toy, sir,” Benny said gruffly.

Vanya approached from the sidelines with a playful little smile, and the meatheads dropped Gray in the middle of the floor. He swallowed hard, his bleary gaze getting stuck on spots of red on the gray carpet. Once he saw a couple splatters, he noticed more. They were all over the center of the floor. Blood, then blotches of darker gray—maybe tears, sweat. Semen. The room reeked of it. A long silk robe came into view, the red fabric dancing around Vanya’s feet. He squatted next to Gray and patted his head.

“There, there.” Vanya’s voice was still angelic and impossibly sweet. “Maybe we’ll get to play more in another life. Mother said you’re a bit of a moron.”

Jesus, he was deranged.

Red sauntered closer, her thin metal cane ready to be used if needed. She didn’t treat Gray as gently. Fisting his hair, she yanked him up on his knees, to which he hissed through clenched teeth.

They faced the darkened booths.

“Dear guests,” Red purred, “I value my customers more than anything, and I would never lie to you.” She slid the cane under Gray’s chin, lifting it slightly. “This young man is more trouble than he’s worth. Should you make a bid, you need to know you’ll be getting a mouthy, rebellious hellion.” With a sharp rap of the cane against his stomach, she ordered Gray to stand up.

He did so on wobbly legs. He’d reached his limit for torture for the moment and didn’t want another bruise to his name.

“If there are no buyers on this animal,” Red continued, “I’ll offer him up as a treat for anyone and everyone—provided that you don’t take him to your staterooms. He’ll be available here in the central den throughout our journey.” She paused. “Now. Let’s see if there are any takers first. Starting at two hundred thousand, this wild boy could be yours. He’s got gorgeous skin that scars nicely, doesn’t he?” She shifted the cane along Gray’s torso, and he swallowed against the vomit that rose. “As you can see on the menu, he is twenty-one years old and built for hot, sadistic grapples. He’s six feet tall, weighs in at one hundred and eighty-nine pounds, and has the temper of an Irishman. If you keep him chained, he could bring you immense pleasure for years.”

Gray steadied his breathing. Aside from a few barely there sounds of rustling and a throat clearing here and there, he wouldn’t know there were people sitting in the booths.

“Lovely abs…” The whisper came from Vanya. Gray had almost forgotten him. Then the psycho kid from hell was tracing the muscles on his lower stomach. “My last toy called them come gutters.” He giggled in delight.

Gray shuddered.

Someone coughed. “Two hundred.” That someone was British and had a meek voice.

“Ah, we have a bidder.” Red sounded both surprised and pleased. “Two hundred—”

“Two-fifty.”

Gray swung his tired gaze to the corner, the first booth there, and tried to see who it was. That man’s voice was like low thunder doused in whiskey.

“Two hundred and seventy-five,” the Brit said impatiently.

“Three hundred.”

“Well, well,” Red purred. “Three hundred for the handsome Mr. B.”

The British man got irritated. “Three hundred and twenty.”

“Three-fifty.”

Silence.

Red ordered Gray to kneel again, and he merely dropped.

There was an insufferable huff coming from the booth where Gray believed the British man sat, but nothing else.

Gray didn’t know what to think. This was his life. His freedom. Yet, two men were bidding on it. It was incomprehensible.

“Going once,” Red said in a teasing tone. After a pause, it was made clear. “Mr. B, the heathen is yours. We hope to enjoy your show.”

Oh fuck. Gray connected the dots. The auction was through, and once his life was no longer his own… It’d happened to the other guys. Eventually, he’d heard most of them scream in terror and agony.

A large man stepped out of the shadows in a swirl of his own cigarette smoke. Gray’s eyes flicked between his briefcase, bespoke suit, and cut jaw. The rest was hazy. He couldn’t focus. A headache was beginning to pull him under, and it was gonna be a big one. Mr. B didn’t speak. Under the low light, his brown hair took on a lighter shade.

A stool appeared, delivered by a goon who quickly backed off. The man who now supposedly owned Gray set his briefcase on the stool and flicked open the lid.

Red and Vanya backed away, too.

Gray had lost all his strength. He remained kneeling on the floor and averted his gaze. This was it.

Mr. B approached and stood before a defeated Gray. There was a grip on his jaw, and Gray was forced to look up. His double vision prevented him from registering anything other than a set of hazel eyes brimming with severity and determination. He swallowed weakly as the man dipped and leaned in close. There was a whisper in Gray’s ear.

“Forgive me.”

A heartbeat later, Gray took a hard blow to the temple that shot his head sideways and knocked him out.

About Cara:

I’m often stoically silent or, if the topic interests me, a chronic rambler. In other words, I can discuss writing forever and ever. Fiction, in particular. The love story—while a huge draw and constantly present—is secondary for me, because there’s so much more to writing romance fiction than just making two (or more) people fall in love and have hot sex. There’s a world to build, characters to develop, interests to create, and a topic or two to research thoroughly. Every book is a challenge for me, an opportunity to learn something new, and a puzzle to piece together. I want my characters to come to life, and the only way I know to do that is to give them substance—passions, history, goals, quirks, and strong opinions—and to let them evolve. Additionally, I want my men and women to be relatable. That means allowing room for everyday problems and, for lack of a better word, flaws. My characters will never be perfect.

Wait…this was supposed to be about me, not my writing.

I’m a writey person who loves to write. Always wanderlusting, twitterpating, kinking, and geeking. There’s time for hockey and cupcakes, too. But mostly, I just love to write.

My Review

Auctioned by Cara Dee

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An amazing start to a new series from Cara Dee! I couldn’t put it down and read through the night in a few short hours.

Auctioned tells the story of Gray (previously from Power Play) and how his seemingly normal life gets ripped away from him and turned upside down in the blink of an eye. Thrust into a world of devastation, torture and heartbreak, Gray doesn’t see a way out.

Enter Darius. Very mysterious and straight to the point. He is hired by Gray’s family to do whatever it takes to find him and bring him home although he doesn’t anticipate helping the ‘strays’ too.

This book is far from a romance or a HEA at this point in the story but it’s a brilliant set up for what is to come in the series. Cara’s writing sucks you in from the first page, all of her books are always very well written and Auctioned is no exception.

A very well deserved five stars!!

Synopsis:

Belle has a wicked fantasy and a secret desire, and she doesn’t know how to hide her feelings anymore.

Andrew has a passion for family and a love for detail, and there are no words that can describe how much he’s looking forward to having his stepdaughter and his younger brother home for the summer.

Jace has an eye for beauty and a thirst for adventure, and he’s the first one to notice that something is different when Belle steps off the plane. From the outside, these three don’t seem to have much in common. But on the inside…their hearts are as dirty as they come.

Excerpt 1

I made a dismayed face in the rearview mirror and rolled up the sleeves of my button-down. If my hair had been lighter, those spots of silver would have been less visible. Alas…they shone like a beacon.

Should I dye it?

“Are you becoming vain?” Jace asked.

“No, but evidently I’m becoming old,” I muttered and left the car. Something was missing—and had been missing for a while. I couldn’t put my finger on it, only that I wasn’t content with my life anymore. As soon as I figured out what to change, I would. Until then, it looked like I’d be complaining about a whole lot. “You know, it wouldn’t kill you to shave.”

Belle coming home was a special occasion to me. Jace didn’t have to look like a slob.

I’d made sure the cleaning service had been extra-thorough yesterday, and I’d ordered Belle’s favorite flowers for her room. Or was I taking things too far? Was I too old-fashioned? I was going to spend the summer with my carefree little brother and my twenty-year-old stepdaughter; I wanted them to find me fun, too. I wasn’t only the…parent, for lack of a better word.

Jace ignored my remark with a smirk, and we entered the bustling airport to bring Belle home.

“How the fuck are we supposed to find her?” Jace grunted. “Christ, I hate people.”

This from the young man who missed having a social life.

I couldn’t blame him, though. Once upon a time, I’d loved Seattle. Now I was much more comfortable in our little town a couple hours north of here. An hour and a half, if Jace was behind the wheel.

As for Jace’s question, I had an answer. “She’s dyed her hair pink, she told me.” I hadn’t seen it yet myself because the last time we spoke, it was over the phone. I’d had this image of a shock of bright hair until her soft laughter had filtered through the receiver and she’d told me it was “faded magenta.” Whatever that meant.

We stood in a sea of arrivals and their families, and I checked my watch. It’d been a while since she’d landed, so she should be here soon.

Jace made a noise. “Holy fuck.”

“What, how pink is it?” I lifted my gaze, scanning the crowd.

“No, that’s not… Uh.”

I frowned at him, then searched for Belle some more, and—goddamn it all. Motherfucker. She emerged with a bright smile as she looked for us. I could only stare. My chest seized, and a flush spread up my chest. Unlike my brother, I’d known that she’d matured to an extent, and it was still a shock. Her gorgeous face had filled the screen of my laptop or phone whenever we Skyped; seeing her body was a whole other experience. And what the hell was she wearing? Those couldn’t be called shorts. The denim rode up high enough to reveal her pockets. Underneath an open flannel shirt, a skimpy top hugged her generous curves.

“Keep that reaction to yourself,” I told Jace, half irritated. With him or myself, I wasn’t sure. Perhaps both. “Belle!” I started walking toward her so I could help with her luggage. Her hair was oddly cute, the long waves shifting in subtle shades of pink. My mouth stretched into a wide smile as she spotted me, and I even had to swallow a lump of emotion. At that point, I successfully pushed aside the unspeakable reaction I’d had, and I hurried to get her in my arms.

“Daddy-o!” She threw her arms around my neck, and I lifted her off the ground.

“God, I’ve missed you.” Tightening my hold on her, I breathed in her light, sweet scent and reveled in having her home again. “My darling, why do you insist on living so far away?”

She laughed tearfully. “If it makes you feel any better, I can’t wait to be done with uni.”

That did make me feel better.

“Look at you, picking up local slang.” Jace walked up behind us with a grin, and Belle was quick to give him a hug too. “When the fuck did you grow up?”

I shot him a look.

Belle smirked and wiped her eyes carefully. These days, she wore makeup. “My roommate taught me a lot. She’s studying to become a stylist.”

“There’s not a thing you need to learn,” I told her firmly and grabbed her roll-aboard. “You’re beautiful as you are.” Maybe a bit too beautiful.

“Such a dad response.” She hugged my arm and held on as we made our way outside. “Can we eat at Coho? I’m starving.”

“Anything you want, sweetheart.” I kissed the top of her head.

Excerpt 2

The eggs were almost finished when Jace limped into the kitchen with a bed head and sleepy scowl.

“Morning, sunshine.” I plated the scrambled eggs and added some sliced tomatoes and bacon bits. “Sleep well?”

“Sort of?” He squinted at nothing and scratched his head. “Um, are we gonna talk about last night?”

I furrowed my brow and slid the plate across the kitchen bar. “Did something happen?”

“You were there, Andrew. At Coho.” He tucked into his food as if it was going to disappear, and I poured myself some cereal. “Something’s changed with Belle. Jesus.” He seemed baffled by something, though it was difficult to tell with the way he was hamstering the food in his cheeks. “Wasn’t she crazy affectionate at dinner?”

“Hm.” To be honest, I’d noticed it. “I wouldn’t read into that.” Certainly not when Jace was a pervert who’d just discovered his niece—his niece, for the love of God—was a very gorgeous young woman. “She missed us, Jace. She was excited to catch up.”

And what a great evening it’d been. Over the best burgers and beers the town had to offer, Jace and I had mostly listened while Belle told us everything about her university and London. Some of the things, I already knew from talking to her. Her contact with Jace stayed at texting and occasional phone calls, so almost everything was new to him. Perhaps that was why the change appeared so drastic.

“Don’t forget your place,” I told Jace. “You’re her uncle. She’s not one of the girls you let hang around for a month before you trade her in for another.”

He shook his head and forked up some eggs. “There’s so much wrong with that sentence. First of all, we’re not related. Second of all, I haven’t gotten laid in almost a year, so don’t paint me as some manwhore. Third of all—” he pointed the fork at me “—you’re the one she was plastered to all evening, not me.”

At that, I had to roll my eyes. “I’m the only parent she has. Don’t cheapen her affection because you suddenly have a hard-on for the wrong person.”

If he pushed it, I might snap. Yesterday had been wonderful. Most of all, it was easy to keep her close when she seemed to want it that way. I’d had my arm around her throughout the evening, not because I possibly was a pervert too, but because I’d missed her very much.

Shortly after, bare feet padded along the floorboards, and Belle appeared in the doorway wearing an old band tee of Jace’s and a pair of cotton shorts. What was it with the length of shorts these days? Was fabric scarce?

Jace coughed into his coffee.

I hoped he burned himself.

“Good morning, darling.” I rose from my stool and switched on the stove again. The pancake batter was waiting for me. “Take a seat and I’ll make pancakes.”

She grinned sleepily and walked over to me. “I’m so glad to be home.” Sneaking under my arm, she wrapped her arms around my middle, and I chuckled. It truly was an affectionate girl who’d stepped off that plane. “Is there anything I can do, Daddy?”

I tilted my head.

Jace snorted behind us.

Daddy

“No,” I responded slowly as my mind started spinning. “You can relax and let me take care of this.”

“’Kay.” With a slight blush covering her cheeks, Belle pulled her hair into a high, messy bun at the top of her head, and then she left the kitchen area to turn on the TV.

“Is she for real?” Jace whispered. “She’s never called you Daddy before, has she? The way she did it… Man, that’s pure filth.”

“Let it go,” I whispered back, irritated. Wound up. There was nothing to read into here.

Wait…this was supposed to be about me, not my writing.

I’m a writey person who loves to write. Always wanderlusting, twitterpating, kinking, and geeking. There’s time for hockey and cupcakes, too. But mostly, I just love to write.

They say, ‘Be true
to yourself and follow your heart.’
But what if the two
things aren’t mutually exclusive?
If only one half is being
honest, can you ever really be complete?
For years I was my
own oppressor until I found my absolute.
He was the addiction
I didn’t want to fight, one that nearly broke me.
But I knew, when it
came to Casper, I was never going to be a survivor.
I enjoyed drowning
too damn much.
